For me, winter means a few feet of snow from November through March. So to stay sharp, I mounted a training board in my apartment. The model is a Wood Grips, by Metolius. The wood feels great on my fingers, and it has a mix of 2-, 3-, and 4-finger pockets in both shallow and deep. Plus two jugs and a sloper. I might have cabin fever, but at least my fingers are ready to go when the snow melts!

At the end of your street! That’s a pretty sweet bit of luck right there.

I’ve been up to Burbage on the couple of occasions that it hasn’t been soaking, and yeah the grades seem to have come down a step or two – much more pleasant than in the height of last summer!

Actually I haven’t been yet, but it has just opened at the end of my street. Other than that, grit is supposed to be at its best when it’s cold, but as it has been pissing it down in Sheffield for the last two months I haven’t had a chance to find out ! Hopefully Jan and Feb will have a lot of cold dry weekends. Darkness during the week has severely curtailed my climbing over the last couple of months :(

I’m finding this time of year to be extremely frustrating for a number of reasons – but mainly due to the fact that it’s been persistently raining for the past few days, and I have been less inclined to go out.

Where does everyone go during these long, dark English months? I’ve heard that Spain is supposed to be good at this time of year.
