Thanks for clarifying Adam. I’ve just noticed the Creative Commons licnese in the footer, I should have looked more closely!

Looks really interesting what Brendan’s been up to on the XML front. Looking forward to exploring this soon.

Anyone know if there’s much desire for open route databases in the UK? Thinking UKClimbing / ROCKFAX in particular are unlikely to go down such a route as they make good money on their (usually excellent) guidebooks.

I’ve done a little bit of work on the XML front in my spare time. Feedback is welcome:

I have a few other ideas about how to extend this even more to represent hierarchical areas and topos using OPML or similar and KML.

Well, both Bouldr and the ACAQ adopted creative commons attribution, share-alike licenses. So that resolved the immediate copyright issue.

I’m not sure to what degree the ACAQ webmaster made progress re: an XML standard for sharing route information. I’ve got some spare time pencilled in over the first three days of july so I’ll try to chase it up then.

hi Matt and Adam,

I’ve very interested in the XML format for climbing data. I’m responsible for about 5 local climbing guides and 3 bouldering guide total over a 1000 routes and problems and am very interested in how to best share and maintain this. Is there a forum or place where I can get more info or follow the discussion on this?

I’ve said to Oli not to rush through editing it all back out. Given that in 7 days time its pretty likely that we will have adopted the CC-BY,SA license for our database, if you do the same for the Bouldr database then you’d no longer be in breach and it’s all roses.

Thanks for getting in touch.

Opening up the Bouldr database is something I’m currently looking at. Creative commons licensing is certainly the way to go – I’ll light a fire under it, and get it sorted ASAP. The main sticking point I have at the moment is getting the data into an appropriate format for sharing. I’d be very interested in working with you on that front.

I’ll get in touch with you via email regarding what needs to be done to remove the copyright material.
